12 Things to Do in Prague in May
May is the time to enjoy the blossoming of the city's parks and cultural events. Are you ready?
May is not only a great month for nightlife in Prague, but also an excellent month to make plans with children, as most parks are open and temperatures are no longer a problem.
It is also an ideal month to visit the city's most important monuments thanks to the international Open House event. It is also a multicultural month where you can witness touches of Latin and Asian culture, thanks to events such as RumFest or the great Prague Asian Festival.
1. Enjoy classical music at a Mozart concert
In the second half of May, classical music is celebrated in the city with the Prague Spring Festival, an event that features both indoor and outdoor concerts and where I recommend you get your tickets early.
But this is not the only way to celebrate classical music in the Czech capital. How about attending a Mozart concert while enjoying a delicious dinner? Well, you can in Prague, at the Mozart Hall at 4 Králodvorská Street.
This unique experience will allow you to enjoy live musicians and singers performing some of the famous composer's works while you enjoy typical Czech and Austrian delicacies. For lovers of classical music, this is definitely a great plan.
2. Celebrate 8 May in Prague
May 8th is a very important day in Prague, celebrating the defeat of the German army in the Czech Republic by the Russian and American armies. On this day it is not uncommon to hear patriotic songs and lively music in places like the Jewish Cemetery in Prague. And if you take a tour of the Jewish Quarter you will hear them too.
It is not uncommon to see various events related to the cause, plus it is a day when many official buildings will be open to visitors without reservation, such as the Parliament or the State Rooms of Prague Castle.
Also, since it is a public holiday, major shops and businesses will be closed or open for a limited time.
3. Join the Pink May Festival
The Rose May Festival takes place at the beginning of May and involves tasting some of the most authentic rosé wines of French gastronomy. The largest event is usually held outdoors in one of Prague's parks, where admission is free, but consumption is not. As this varies from year to year, I recommend you visit the event's website.
This rosé and claret wine tasting festival hosts more than 25 wineries from Moravia and Bohemia. But don't limit yourself to just tasting the wine; pair it with some French-Czech dishes such as foie gras, baguettes, cheeses and seafood.
But if you're interested in Czech drinks, there are plenty of local breweries in Prague and to experience them to the fullest I recommend taking a pub crawl around Prague.
4. Take a cruise on the Voltava
For that moment or day when you're tired of walking around the city and you think you don't feel like doing anything, here's the solution: take a cruise through Prague. The weather is much better in May, so I think it's the perfect time to enjoy the city from a different perspective while you're on the top deck of the boat.
These activities usually last no more than an hour and you can see the most iconic sights of the city without leaving your seat. Kampa Island, Prague Castle and Charles Bridge are just some of the sights you will see on the tour.
All in all, this tour is ideal to make the most of those days you think are going to be wasted, but you can also do it whenever you feel like it, of course, because the experience is beautiful.
5. Escape to Český Krumlov from Prague
Český Krumlov is a small town in the South Bohemian region whose historic centre and castle are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Getting to this medieval town from Prague takes just under two and a half hours by car, so if you don't feel like driving that long I recommend booking an excursion to Český Krumlov from Prague so you don't have to worry about anything.
Why May for this getaway? Although there are many excursions from Prague, I think this historic centre is something you shouldn't miss, and taking advantage of this warmer month to visit it is a great idea. Here are some of the key places to visit in Český Krumlov:
- The Castle, its museum and theatre.
- The Church of St. Vitus.
- Stroll through the medieval streets.
- Walk along the banks of the Vltava River.
6. Take part in the Prague Marathon
The Prague Marathon is usually held on the first weekend in May. The route is similar to the half marathon held in April so if you take part in the race you will be able to run through the historical parts of Prague, such as the Charles Bridge, the Old Town Square and the Kings' Route.
Whether you take part or not, bear in mind that the Prague Marathon is very popular, hence the whole city will be in tune with the event on the weekend with multiple food and hydration stalls.
It's also worth remembering that, during the Marathon, some areas especially in the centre will be closed to traffic and access to tourist attractions and other places in the centre will be limited. However, you will be able to enjoy special menus in many restaurants in Prague. For more information about the event please visit the following link.
7. Have fun at Rumfest
Rumfest is an international festival where you can taste a wide variety of rum, participate in prizes and enjoy a spectacular atmosphere. The festival is ticketed and takes place in mid-May at the 'luté lázně. For more information on prices and opening times visit the event's website.
In addition to Latin American music, Caribbean cuisine delicacies and special rum cocktails, the event will also host training sessions and workshops for true rum enthusiasts. Not only will you be able to taste and enjoy the Caribbean atmosphere, but you will also be able to buy some of the most authentic rums at great prices. You are sure to appreciate this party festival.
8. Join Open House Prague
The Open House is the world's largest architectural event and takes place every year in more than 42 cities around the world. The Prague edition invites enthusiasts to visit 40 otherwise inaccessible buildings. The event takes place in mid-May, over just a couple of days, and tours are usually organised from 10 am to 6 pm.
Tours are usually on foot, and some of the most interesting areas can be explored. These spaces range from Prague' s most iconic monuments and state buildings to some of the secret canteens of the railway station. If Prague's architecture is something you appreciate, don't hesitate to book a ticket on the official website of this great event.
9. Celebrate the Prague Asian Festival
As the name suggests, this event brings Asia to Prague, at least on a spiritual and gastronomic level. This festival takes place at the beginning of May in Smíchovská náplavka and lasts a whole weekend from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm. For more information visit the following link.
This is an extremely popular tasting festival in Prague, where you can enjoy authentic cuisine from China, India, Vietnam, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Philippines. It is a cultural exchange event, where some of the most qualified chefs from Asian countries and the Czech Republic perform representing the culture of their respective countries.
It is not a food event as such, but rather an event to taste and enjoy the music and the atmosphere. What better way to enjoy the best of Czech and Asian cuisine in the same time and space!
10. Enjoy the Czech Day of Love
The 1st of May is a well-known day in Prague, as it is celebrated as the day of love. It is a very busy day when many Czechs go out with their families for picnics in the city's parks. It is also a day when more festive evening events are held in some of Prague's nightclubs, most notably Duplexy Zlatý Strom.
While many shops, businesses and even some major attractions remain closed or open for a limited time, the city buzzes with excitement. Part of the excitement could also be attributed to the fact that it is a public holiday due to the fact that it coincides with Labour Day.
11. Pick sakuras and magnolias in bloom in Vrtba
May is the perfect month to see lilacs, cherry trees or magnolias in bloom, as they are almost everywhere in Prague. In addition, most of Prague's parks and gardens are open during this month and most of them are free of charge.
However, if you are looking for spectacular scenery and a blanket of colourful flowers, I recommend the Vrtba Gardens. By mid-May, they have a colourful surface full of cherry trees and magnolias in bloom, a picture-perfect landscape where you can photograph and pick the flowers you want without any hassle.
This is an amazing baroque garden built on the slopes of Petrin Hill. It is not a large garden, but the views are incredible. It is only accessible in May, and is open from 10am to 6pm.
12. Have a picnic in Petrin Park
Petrin Park is wonderful all year round, but during the month of May it gets special attention. During the first 3 weekends of May this park fills up with families and friends looking to enjoy the good food and the atmosphere that forms in the park. On these weekends many street vendors sell sandwiches, sweets and nuts. In addition, many street artists take advantage of this exodus to promote their art and create a welcoming atmosphere.
Petrin Park is the perfect place to spend a weekend in May, and you can even take a stroll through the woods on the other side of the Hunger Wall in the Kinsky Gardens. However, the big attraction of this park at this time of the year are the trees covered with pink flowers. You should try a picnic there!
Weather in Prague in May
Prague in May experiences warm weather with temperatures ranging between 15-25°C. However, three days in mid-May are known as the days of the "Frozen Saints", when the temperature drops to almost freezing point in the morning.
It's the first month of spring where you can be sure there will be no snowfall - at least not in Prague! It also doesn't rain as much as in March and April. If you are not a big fan of the heat, this is the last month to enjoy the mild weather.
On the other hand, if you are looking for hot weather, I recommend visiting the city in July. So, in terms of weather, May is the best time to visit Prague.
What to pack for a visit to Prague in May
Although temperatures are starting to warm up, rain showers may interfere with your sightseeing plans, so I recommend taking waterproof shoes and a small umbrella.
For most days, you can loosen up your suitcase, as you can pack lightly, without fear of catching a cold. Don't forget a jacket for windy days.
Tips for visiting Prague in May
In May there are usually many more tourists, as the warm weather is very attractive. That's why I recommend you to come to Prague in the first days of May, so you can enjoy the Prague Castle and other monuments without queues.
I would also advise you that from May onwards the number of scammers in Prague increases, so be careful where you keep your belongings.
