The cathedral, which was begun in 1858 and completed in 1878, was designed by architect James Renwick Jr. It is one of the most important Gothic cathedrals in the United States and the exterior of the cathedral is characterised by its soaring spires and intricate stone carvings.
Inside, as you'll see once you enter, you'll notice beautiful stained glass windows, elaborate altars and a large organ, as well as sculptures such as a large Pieta.
It is worth noting that there are no tours on weekdays during the masses which run from 7:00-8:30, 12:00-13:30 and 17:30-18:30 each day. St. Patrick's Cathedral is an active place of worship and holds regular religious services, such as daily masses and special liturgical events. It is also a popular venue for religious ceremonies such as weddings, christenings and funerals.
As a place of worship, travellers are requested to behave and wear appropriate clothing for the visit. It is also the seat of the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York and is dedicated to St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland.
