Step by Step
Surrounded by water, a speedboat ride is the perfect way to get an overview of Miami. This 45-minute ride departs from the docks near the Bayside Marketplace outdoor mall. This is the only ride that takes you all the way to the ocean, and you can exceed 40mph during the ride.
You'll pass through the channel that runs along the harbour, a huge area that houses both the shopping and cruise ship areas. Next, you'll cross a small stretch of water that leads to Star Island, the island of the rich and famous. Gloria Estefan, Will Smith and several CEOs of major companies (Stuart Miller, Phillip Frost, Vladislav Doronin, etc.) have their residences here.
A few metres further on is the small Flagler Memorial Island. Completely artificial, it was built in 1920 to commemorate Miami pioneer Henry M. Flagler. In the centre is an obelisk with four allegorical sculptures at its base.
Next, the speedboat will take you near Fisher Island, one of Miami's most exclusive areas. Once owned by African-American millionaire Dana Dorsey, it is now home to resorts and a golf course.
After seeing the beaches and green palm trees of Fisher Island, you'll quickly reach South Beach, the southern tip of Miami Beach. It overlooks the ocean and its coastline is characterised by long white sandy beaches and Art Deco buildings. Locals call it SoBe and frequent it to soak up the sun and enjoy the turquoise waters.
Before heading back to Bayside Marketplace, you'll see the silhouette of Virginia Key, a natural oasis famous for the Miami Seaquarium and pristine beaches. This small key is a popular destination for cycling enthusiasts thanks to the bike paths that run through it.
