Step by Step

Discover the coastal areas of the Scottish capital on this tour to Holy Island, Alnwick Castle and Northumberland from Edinburgh. On this day trip, lasting around nine and a half hours and in groups of around 32 people, an expert guide will accompany you throughout the tour. An air-conditioned vehicle will pick you up from Edinburgh and take you to the various sights and places of interest.

One of the most impressive stops on this tour is Holy Island, for which you will have to cross the English border. This small island is a thriving community with a busy harbour, shops, hotels and inns. There is plenty to see on the island and on the mainland. Bird-watching, fishing, golf, painting and photography are just some of the activities that can be enjoyed here.

On Holy Island you will be able to visit a number of monuments, including:

  • Lindisfarne Castle: a 16th century castle located in what was once a very unstable border area between England and Scotland and was frequently attacked by the Vikings.
  • Lindisfarne Priory: here you will cross the dramatic causeway to reach the island of Lindisfarne in the footsteps of the ancient monks who built their priory here almost 1400 years ago.

In addition to visiting the island, you will have the opportunity to travel to the county of Northumberland and enjoy the sights of Alnwick Castle. This castle has more than 950 years of history to discover and its origins date back to the Norman period.

The second largest inhabited castle in the UK, Alnwick has served as a military outpost, teaching school, evacuee shelter, film set and, not least, home. As far as film locations go, you'll probably be familiar with it from the Harry Potter films.

The tour was very good, it was more comprehensive than I expected and I learnt a lot about the history of Scotland. The only negative point in my view was the weather, which unfortunately was not on our side and detracted a little from my experience.
