Step by Step
This route will allow you to discover one of the best hiking destinations in the world. A bus will pick you up from your hotel - only if you are staying in Funchal, Câmara de Lobos and Santa Cruz - and take you to Pico do Arieiro, the starting point of the hike. The route is circular and, once completed, you will return by bus to the starting point. The activity usually takes between 7 and 9 hours.
The trail between Pico Arieiro and Pico Ruivo is considered the most beautiful in Madeira. You will pass through low clouds, rocky outcrops and sometimes even small tunnels. The scenery is very impressive and allows you to admire a beautiful view of the Fajã da Nogueira valley. You will reach the Ninho da Manta viewpoint, a term meaning "nest of the bushman".
Madeira's subtropical climate and the unspoilt nature of the interior provide an ideal habitat for hundreds of species, especially birds. During the walk you will be able to spot canaries, blackcaps, kestrels, the famous Madeiran chaffinch and many more.
For this high altitude walk, it is important to wear suitable footwear, long trousers and a small pocket torch. In general, it is advisable to dress in layers and carry waterproof jackets and a water bottle in your rucksack.
