Step by Step
The Thoiry ZooSafari offers a unique experience combining a traditional zoo with a driving safari. With the purchase of a ticket, you can enter the zoo without queuing and admire numerous species at close quarters. You can do this from your car or on foot, as some areas can be approached without a car.
In addition to the more traditional, but no less beautiful species, this area is home to the following specimens:
- Southern white rhinoceros - An endangered species and one of the largest land mammals in the world. Despite its name, its colour is light grey or brown. The term "white" comes from a corruption of the Afrikaans "wyd", meaning "wide" or "vast".
- Bongo - A medium to large antelope with a shy character and great agility. The bongo is one of the few antelopes that inhabit tropical forests.
- White-faced saki - Lives in the northern regions of the Amazon and is characterised by a thick, dark coat with white patches on the muzzle and chest.
- Madagascar day gecko - Found only on the African island, where it lives in lush tropical rainforests. It is notable for its vivid colouring. The body can vary from bright green to blue, with spots or stripes of different shades depending on the subspecies.
- Cassowary - A large flightless bird that lives in the rainforests of Australia and New Zealand. It has a large crest on its head, formed by fleshy skin protuberances. Depending on the species, this crest may be red, blue or purple.
Thoiry's ZooSafari is also suitable for insect lovers. Here you can see the giant Malaysian stick insect, atta ants (leaf-cutting ants) and the Caribena versicolor, a spider that lives mainly in Guadeloupe and Martinique.
