Step by Step
This walking tour will allow you to discover the history of Avignon, a city that owes much to the presence of the Popes during the 14th century. The itinerary lasts about 3 hours and includes an expert guide who will explain the history of the following attractions:
- Cathedral of Notre-Dame des Doms - An example of Provençal Romanesque architecture, recognisable by the large gilded statue of the Virgin Mary at the top of the bell tower. Inside, the frescoes of Simone Martini, a contemporary of Giotto and one of the best exponents of the Italian school, stand out.
- Walls - A snake of rock that embraces the historic centre. They were built in the 14th century to protect the city from mercenary raids. From here you can enjoy a beautiful view over the river.
- Papal Palace - The residence of the Popes. It is an imposing building in Gothic style and contains artistic and architectural treasures. The entrance fee includes a tablet (Histopad) with augmented reality that recreates daily life in the 14th century. The tour includes a skip-the-line ticket
- Place de l'Horloge - The heart of Avignon. Here you will find some of the most emblematic buildings - the Town Hall (Hôtel de Ville) and the Opera House, as well as a number of bars and restaurants.
Along the tour you will see other emblematic places of the city, such as the Saint-Bénezet Bridge or the Rocher des Doms Park.
The itinerary ends with a wine tasting in a traditional restaurant, usually next to the central Place de l'Horloge. Near Avignon, in the hills bordering the Rhône, the Côtes du Rhône wines are produced. This area is best known for its red wines, which can be composed of 14 grape varieties.
