If you are looking for something different to do on your holiday, then I recommend a Buggy adventure from Punta Cana to Macau Beach. These trips usually cost an average of €50 and take around 4 hours or so. The great advantage of these tours is that you get to enter rural areas and appreciate the Dominican Republic from a different point of view.

If you want to visit the beaches of Punta Cana, the buggy, also known as a sand buggy, is your ideal means of transport as it is made for driving on the sand. With it you can enter the jungle, get dirty with dirt, get to the beach, get dirty with the sand and then take a well-deserved swim in the crystal clear waters of Playa de Macao.

On the way you will pass through cocoa and coffee plantations. You will also be able to see some rural areas and houses of the region. Remember that at all times you will be travelling with a group and will be guided by a professional guide. Don't hesitate to ask them any questions you may have before or during the buggy adventure.

When travelling by buggy you will be exposed to dust, dirt and sand. Although it can be fun to get dirty on the road, I recommend that you protect your eyes, nose and mouth. You can use a scarf to cover your nose and mouth and sunglasses. Don't forget to ask for your helmet before you start the tour.

Buggy adventure along the Flintstones route

Punta Cana is one of the booming tourist destinations in the Dominican Republic thanks to all the activities you can do. Among the buggy adventures is a Flintstones-themed tour that you're sure to love. The average cost of these excursions is €70 and they last around 5 hours.

Normally these tours start in the centre of Bávaro. From there you will drive an automatic buggy following your professional guide, accompanied by the rest of your group. You will drive through different rock formations and see cows, horses and many other animals along the way.

After half an hour or so, you will make your first stop at a typical house to taste coffee or eat whatever you prefer. The prices are very cheap so I recommend that you try some sweets before you continue. You will continue along a slightly more irregular path until you reach the "Cueva de la Fantasía" (Cave of Fantasy). From here you should walk up to it.

From inside the cave you will climb some stairs to Bedrock City, a unique site consisting of a group of caves adorned with elements of the famous cartoon The Flintstones. You will see different villas such as Fred Flintstone's villa and the garage with Flintstone Mobile. This is definitely one of the best things to do with children in Punta Cana and they will be fascinated by the cartoons.

Here you can spend a day interacting with different squirrel monkeys with the help of your tour guides. These experiences, with the buggy tour included, usually last about 5 hours and cost an average of €100.

The journey on this type of excursion begins as with all other adventures. You should always listen carefully to the professional guide's advice before you start the tour - remember to wear your helmet! Afterwards you will start riding through the countryside and jungle of Punta Cana. This usually includes a stop to rest and buy something in a typical house.

The next stop will be Monkeyland, a site covering about 2 hectares of nature. A variety of monkey species from both Africa and the Americas are preserved here. During the tour you can feed them and take pictures with them. Please note that these animals have a specific diet, so you should only feed them what the guides tell you to.

Don't be afraid to interact with these animals! They are used to visitors and are very playful. Enjoy their presence and take the opportunity to take lots of photos, selfies and videos with them. After this visit, it will be time to return in your buggy to the starting point.

Punta Cana is a highly sought after tourist destination in the Dominican Republic. This is due to its beautiful scenery and different environments. Buggy adventures help you explore many of these sites in a single day and in a fun way.

The further you go with your vehicle, the more you will see jungles, plantations, rural areas and underground cave formations. The buggy is definitely a great way to see the Dominican Republic beyond Punta Cana, as you'll get to see much more than just the most popular beaches.

You will also have the opportunity to see different farm animals such as horses, sheep and pigs. If you choose an adventure to Monkeyland, you'll be able to see and interact with the monkeys housed in this natural park. If you are a nature lover, Punta Cana is the ideal destination for you.

Tips for a buggy adventure in Punta Cana

Buggy Day| ©Dave Kerr

As I mentioned before, if you travel by buggy you are bound to get dirty. That's why my first recommendation is to wear comfortable clothes that won't stain easily. A pair of comfortable shoes that you can wash after your adventure will also be the best option. If you want to take a backpack, make sure it is waterproof so that your belongings don't get wet.

On the other hand, I advise you to try to plan your trip during the best time to visit Punta Cana. Between October and December the rainy season will be over, so the weather is pleasant and you'll have more freedom to get out and explore as much as you want.

Don't forget to apply sunscreen whenever you go to the beach or on a buggy adventure. Try to take it with you so you can apply more during the day. The last thing you want is to get sunstroke on your holiday.

Accidents can happen in buggies, but as long as you travel responsibly, whether behind the wheel or in the back seat, you shouldn't have any problems. I liked the fact that the buggies are complemented by a visit to a traditional market. As many as I have been to Punta Cana more than 4 times, I had never been to one. I recommend bringing a few extra dollars in case you want to buy something in cash.
